Celebrating Harmony Week 2026
Harmony Week was a wonderful opportunity for the children, families, and educators at Branxton Preschool to come together and celebrate Australia's rich cultural diversity while promoting the values of inclusiveness, respect, and belonging.
Throughout the week, the children participated in a variety of meaningful learning experiences that explored culture, identity, friendship, community, and the important message that "Everyone Belongs." We began by discussing what Harmony Week means and how everyone is unique in their own special way, yet we all belong in many places, with preschool being one of them.
As part of our learning, we shared the stories All Are Welcome, Whoever You Are, and The Boy Who Wanted to Shrink His Name. These books sparked thoughtful conversations about diversity, identity, acceptance, and belonging. Together, we explored how people may have different backgrounds, traditions, languages, and experiences, while recognising that everyone deserves kindness, respect, and a place where they feel welcomed and valued.
The children helped prepare for our Stay and Play sessions by working alongside educators o make orange play dough, while also learning about the significance of the colour orange during Harmony Week. They created a visual representation of belonging by taking photographs with educators and friends, celebrating the strong relationships and connections that have been built throughout the year.
Creative experiences were another highlight of the week. The children collaborated to create a large Earth collage by tearing and gluing pieces of coloured paper, developing their fine motor skills while discussing how people from different countries, towns, and homes all belong to one global community. Music and movement activities using colourful scarves encouraged coordination, creativity, and plenty of laughter as the children explored rhythm and movement together.
One of the highlights of the week was our special Harmony Week Stay and Play morning. Families joined us in our outdoor learning environment to celebrate alongside the children and educators. It was wonderful to see children confidently guiding their loved ones around the preschool, sharing their favourite spaces, engaging in play, and proudly introducing their friends. The morning was filled with connection, conversation, and a strong sense of community.
We were also fortunate to welcome a parent who shared his Scottish heritage with us by playing the bagpipes. The children listened in awe and enjoyed experiencing a different cultural tradition firsthand. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from the diverse cultures represented within our preschool community.
Harmony Week provided countless opportunities for children to learn about diversity, celebrate differences, and recognise the many things that connect us. Through stories, discussions, creative experiences, music, family participation, and cultural sharing, the children developed a deeper understanding of respect, inclusion, and belonging.Thank you to all of our families who contributed to making Harmony Week such a meaningful and memorable celebration. Together, we continue to create a community where every child and family feels welcomed, respected, valued, and connected.
