Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2025
This term we proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week by connecting with the rich culture and traditions of the Wonnarua people. The children were invited into the Dallanjir Room, where they immersed themselves in a range of meaningful experiences that deepened their understanding and appreciation of First Nations culture.
A highlight of the week was a special visit from two of our Preschool mums, who guided the children through a traditional ochre experience. With great excitement and care, the children helped crush and grind ochre rock into powder before mixing it with water to create paint. They were then offered the opportunity to have their faces painted with traditional Wonnarua markings—girls received a line of dots, while boys were adorned with a strip of ochre either under the eyes and across the bridge of their nose or across their forehead.
Aunty Michelle also joined us to share her knowledge and artistry. She introduced a painting station where children decorated clapping sticks using traditional techniques. With gentle guidance, Aunty Michelle helped the children explore Indigenous symbols and the cultural significance of their creations.
This celebration was a powerful and respectful way for children to honour First Nations culture, fostering a deeper sense of identity, belonging, and connection to Country.
